Grand Slam Award 04/05/2004 1:33 PM ET
Diamondbacks Media Relations PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks awarded today the second annual Grand Slam Award to the Amblyopia Foundation of America, Inc. (AFA) and the ACCEL (formerly LATCH school). The $100,000 grant is designed to make a larger impact on one community organization. Due to the very successful fundraising efforts by Diamondbacks Charities in 2003, they were able to award two deserving organizations $100,000 each. The AFA is the nation's only non-profit health organization dedicated solely to establishing a nationwide vision-screening program for schoolchildren. Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a serious public health problem and the leading cause of monocular blindness in America. The Grand Slam Award will be used to screen the vision of 500 children at the Thomas J. Pappas School, launching a state-of-the-art video game recently developed to detect amblyopia. ACCEL is a private, non-profit school and adult program serving individuals with special needs within Maricopa County. The school program is the largest in Arizona and serves over 200 students with all types of mental and physical disabilities, learning disabilities and autism. The grant will be used to develop an outdoor learning environment, the Grand SLAM (Student Learning and Mobility) Center, at ACCEL's Metro Campus. Funds for this grant are raised through events such as the annual Diamondbacks Charities Golf Classic, "Shirts Off Our D'Backs," the Jerry Colangelo Roast, the Bank One Ballpark tour program and other team-related activities. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
