Vision Screening - 3 Steps Further
|
A nationwide vision screening program would unquestionably have enormous value. But the ultimate goal of preventing blindness in our children will not be realized without assuring that needed medical follow-up has occurred.

PROFESSIONAL CONFIRMATION (Completion of professional eye examination is confirmed.)
New, innovative technology takes the ideal vision screening program even further by integrating follow-up eye examination results into the database.
PROFESSIONAL DATA (Results from professional eye examination are captured electronically.)
Data from eye doctor offices can be easily captured by filling in a few circles on a computerized questionnaire card, generated at the time of school vision screenings. Results from professional eye examinations are faxed or emailed to a centralized data repository. The information on this card is automatically read and linked with the child’s individual vision screening results.
PROFESSIONAL ANALYSIS (Epidemiological analysis is enhanced with the addition of
professional eye examination data.)
Linking professional eye examination data to vision screening data provides a level of epidemiological analysis not otherwise possible. To date, national data regarding childhood vision disorders has not existed. For the first time ever, the nature and severity of vision problems in children will be known on a national scale. This data will provide on-going validation of the vision screening program and provide valuable information for public health policy decisions.
Through innovative use of new technology, The Amblyopia Foundation of America believes a scientifically accurate, logistically practical nationwide vision screening program can be deployed for $10 million annually. Is $10 million too much to protect the health of our children’s vision? Consider that the United States Government currently spends nearly $30 million every day ($5.5 billion per year) on the national school lunch program. Compared to the costs of other school-based health programs, $10 million per year to vision screen virtually every schoolchild in America is an incredible bargain.
